Hardee County Fire Rescue and Hardee County Emergency Management along with Polk County Fire Rescue Hazardous Materials Team and Highlands County Fire Department are on scene of an overturned tanker off SR 64 East in Hardee County.
Around 2:50 p.m. on Monday, August 13th, a semi-tanker traveling eastbound carrying 8,000 gallons of diesel and gasoline lost control causing it to overturn and spill approximately 4,500 gallons onto the shoulder. The road will be completely shut down into the evening as wreckers upright and remove the semi and a third party clean up crew excavates the contaminated soil.
The driver was airlifted to a local hospital. His condition is not known.
State Road 64 East is shut down between Kelly Roberts Road and Parnell Road. Florida Department of Transportation has put out detour signs.
